Recurrent Thrush, BV or UTIs: A Vagina Microbiome First Approach

Saffron Walden Fields Scene

Often, we focus solely on the gut microbiome; but the body is home to several distinct microbiomes. One of the most important (and often overlooked) for women is the vaginal microbiome.

Unlike the gut, the vaginal microbiome is relatively simple in structure, which actually makes it easier to identify when something is out of balance. Research has identified five major vaginal community state types, each differing in microbial composition and abundance (Raval et al, 2011). When this balance shifts, symptoms often follow.

What Is Vaginal Dysbiosis?

Vaginal dysbiosis occurs when the composition of vaginal bacteria becomes imbalanced. Typically, this involves a reduction in protective Lactobacillus species and an overgrowth of other bacteria or yeasts.

Thrush, BV & UTIs: Why They Keep Returning

Most women will experience thrush, bacterial vaginosis (BV) or UTIs at some point in their lives. For some, these episodes are isolated and resolve quickly.

For others, infections become recurrent, persistent, and deeply disruptive - affecting daily life, confidence, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

This is often the point where women feel stuck in a cycle of treatment, short-term relief, and relapse.

Why Testing Matters

When symptoms keep returning, generalised, non-specific interventions often just prolong the issue.

Targeted testing with a Nutritionist allows us to:

  • Identify what is actually out of balance
  • Understand why symptoms keep recurring
  • Avoid unnecessary supplement costs or prolonged ineffective treatments

This creates a clear, strategic restoration plan, rather than guesswork, such as with my Vagina Microbiome Testing & Insights Package .

What Influences Vaginal Microbiome Health?

Several factors can disrupt vaginal balance, including:

  • Antibiotic use
  • Low oestrogen levels
  • Chronic disease
  • Immune suppression
  • Lifestyle and stress
  • Hygiene habits

Often, it’s a combination rather than a single trigger.

Stress, The Nervous System & Vaginal Health

Nervous system health is a crucial (and often missed) piece of the puzzle.

Research shows that increased psychosocial stress is associated with higher rates of bacterial vaginosis (Nansel et al, 2006), independent of other risk factors. Chronic stress can impair immune function, alter microbial balance, and reduce resilience to infections.

This is why addressing stress, sleep, and nervous system regulation is a core part of my work - not an afterthought.

pH, Hormones & The Menstrual Cycle

One of my first starting points is assessing vaginal pH, ideally across a full menstrual cycle. This helps us understand patterns and symptom cadence.

Symptoms often fluctuate in response to hormonal changes. For example rising oestrogen levels can increase susceptibility to Candida overgrowth (thrush)

Understanding these patterns allows us to work with your physiology, not against it.

A Nutrition-Led, Whole-Body Approach

As a nutritionist, my role is to:

  • Support restoration of the vaginal microbiome
  • Address dietary factors that influence yeast and bacterial balance
  • Use targeted supplements only where appropriate
  • Reduce the likelihood of repeated infections through sustainable lifestyle changes

This isn’t about restriction or quick fixes - it’s about long-term stability.
